www.climateradio.org Tomorrow’s climate Cornwall’s challenge.
Transition Penwith was officially launched on Nov 24th with talk by Richard Heinberg. Andrew George MP opened the evening. 350 attended. Excellent talk and great to see so many attending. All ages and varieties! TF was mentioned.
Andrew George is setting up a ‘cross party’ meeting for 19th Jan in Penzance to galvanize the whole of the county to work together to make Cornwall fully sustainable. More details to come.
NB NB NB a reminder that I am starting to gather a posse of future ‘Transition’ Councillors for next years’ local elections.
Has anyone any Undercurrents films for us to use for future film showings?
At Falmouth Town Centre Forum meeting 20th. I requested
“...that as part of the comments on the T O’R Study, the Forum put pressure on: County, District and Falmouth Councils as well as potential developers to make sure that all planning decisions for Falmouth are in line with a sustainable integrated plan for Falmouth.
Transition Falmouth is highlighting the urgent need to respond to the twin challenges of climate change and peak oil. These issues are not just for government and specialist agencies, but for us locally to take responsibility for creating a vibrant low energy community.
Though the prime mover in initiating plans for Falmouth, Carrick Council reveals in its draft 10 year plan that it is not taking an active lead in providing for the sustainable development of the area. Hence we need to do what local communities do best…. lobby and confront all developments to make sure they are all assessed by the triple bottom line of Social, Environmental as well as Economic auditing. Before ‘localisation’ is forced on us we need to develop an energy descent plan. I also strongly recommend that we need to re-evaluate the principles underpinning decision making for our area."
I also told them about the ’pro-pedestrianisation events’ and some were very supportive.
Dick and Lorely visited the new sustainable development on Jubilee Wharf to meet the designer.
Transition Penwith are showing the same films as TF but some additional events include: ‘Peak Oil, Don’t Panic! The Transition Concept’ talk by Rob Hopkins on Feb 1st. ‘Energy Beyond Oil’ talk by Paul Mobbs Feb 24th, and a workshop with Paul Mobbs on the 25th. Similar events will be taking place in Falmouth fairly soon after.
Proposed: Sustainable Housing Conference for Falmouth. Please put the word around, ideas and support needed.
The Sustainable Communities Bill is being introduced in Parliament, a very useful tool.
Philip made a response to the consultation on Carrick’s Core Strategy Document. Copy available to view on request. |
