Last Rights – press release: 26/2/03
Wednesday night saw the first public event for Last Rights, a Falmouth based group formed to support and increase the awareness of the way we deal with and celebrate the end of life.
The meeting was well attended, pleasing the organisers who had spent the past 6 months collating information and their aims and objectives resulting in a comprehensive leaflet and a petition and latterly the public meeting.
The main theme for the evening was Green Burials with a talk by Penny Lally of Penzance on her experience of setting up a green burial site.
Although there was interest in the existing provision of green burial sites, the council’s responsibilities, legalities and regulations the informal discussion broadened out into personal experiences of celebration leading to Elaine, one attendee to comment afterwards… “I came along to support a friend but I thought it would be boring. I thought it was just about economical funerals for a bunch of greenies with weird ideas. It wasn’t like that, hearing peoples personal stories, it sounded really special. Now I think I would like to be buried like that”.
Future monthly meetings will be held at Falmouth Green Centre in line with the underpinning environmental aims of the group. The next public meeting will be on the theme of Celebration with a speaker from North Cornwall.
